The present state of dilapidation

As result of the public expropriation of the sea Loggia of Palazzo del Principe in the 1930s, the building was not only serious tampered with, but also saw the start of the improper use of the rooms which still continues today. At present the internal parts of the building belong to the Comune. Having been transformed into workshops by the Ditta Ansaldo in the course of the works for the construction of the underground, they are still used by the Municipal Transport Company for the repair of the coaches of the underground.

This has brought about a grave state of dilapidation both on the inside and the outside of the sixteenth-century buildings, which are ruined by the incongruous presence of tubing and metal fixtures.

This situation is aggravated by the scarce maintenance, evident also from the condition of the arcade, as can be seen from the photographs to the side.

Considering the historical and architectural importance of the Loggia, which had already suffered damaging works in the first half of the century, the problem of the recovery of the structure becomes most urgent, so that the monument’s dignity can be restored and it can be used appropriately.
