Palazzo del Principe

THE HISTORY
(by Laura Stagno)

Palazzo del Principe was built and decorated to the orders of Andrea Doria (1466-1560) on land bought by him between 1521 and 1529. In March 1533, when the emperor Charles V was guest for twelve days, Andrea’s residence would have been already finished.

The position chosen, facing the sea and just outside the city
walls of Genoa, was excellent from the military point of view, offering the possibility for the Doria galleys to moor to the south and a steep hill to defend it to the back. The initial nucleus of the residence was decorated by Perin del Vaga, pupil of Raphael, with an important cycle of frescoes on mythological themes. Andrea’s successor, Giovanni Andrea I (1540-1606), enlarged the palace on both sides, doubling its size.
